ABC is for Circus is our current ART AFTER SCHOOL artroom inspiration!
This book by artist Patrick Hruby is colourful, graphic and dynamic.
We love this book as a way to explore:
- Shapes! Making pictures with shapes
- Patterns and Repetition
- Portraits and Expression
- What is a silhouette?
- Colours and Contrast
- Composition and Scale
Things we could notice about Hruby's pictures :
- Hruby makes faces using simple geometric shapes
- The things in the background are shapes with no detail are called silhouettes
- Hruby's style is graphic and exaggerated. Legs don't bend that way in real life!
- There are a lot of patterns in these pictures. And opposites
- How did this artist choose to depict hands and feet?
- Hruby uses almond shapes for eyes and hair
We're going to use shapes to create a picture called a PORTRAIT.
- Artwork made with cut paper is called a collage
- Our collage portrait will include the head, neck and shoulders of someone at Hruby's Circus
- We're using bright colours and shapes inspired by Hruby's illustration style
- Our portraits will have silouhettes in the background

| Starting with a large oval. Artists are encouraged to experiment with their portrait features and expression before gluing down. |
