Join Our Final Art After School Session Starting May 8

We've been having a great time at Art After School this Spring! We launched Juicy Wednesdays, made more awesome art and as things are warming up we are spending more and more time outside! We've been out back in the Acorn community garden space just enjoying the outdoors. It's been so nice to be able to start having some class time outside again! We been loving watching the animals around the bird feeder, especially the Robins, Squirrels...and pair of Cardinals!

There has been a bit of garden work- weeding, raking, digging and turning the soil and deciding where to plant things. Yesterday's group dug up some worms and discovered a fat grub. We have some wonderful new veggie seeds to plant from Urban Harvest - but we have to get the new soil turned and these seeds started ASAP...And make our bean pole tents!
We have *lots* of fun things to do at Art After School this Spring!

MAKING COLOUR WHEELS

Somtimes colour wheels are basic.
This colour wheel features just the primary and secondary colours.
We're kicking off our ART AFTER SCHOOL learning by creating our own colour wheels.
It's great to start the learning year with this activity, a fun way to explore basic colour theory.
Making a colour wheel teaches kids how to mix and is a helpful tool when choosing colours.
This color wheel shows the tertiary colours. These are the colors formed by mixing a primary and a secondary color.
That's why the hue is a two word name, such as blue-green, red-violet, and yellow-orange.
This wheel demonstrates Hue Tint Tone and Shade.

A colour wheel can show a little information, or a lot!
Colours that sit next to each other on the colour wheel are called
analogous colours. When combined their effect is harmonious.
Complementary colours sit across from another on the colour wheel and have a strong contrast,
like green and red or purple and yellow.
You can start making a colour wheel with paper shapes and stickers.
Put a primary colour in each third of a paper plate, and built on that!
Love chalk pastels AND they are a great tool for introducing colour mixing.
Plus you can remove chalk with an eraser.
I give kids a extra piece of paper to try out their colours and blending.
We can try out fingers, brushes, q-tips and sponges.
I have had students use paint and chalk.
This artist concentrates hard as she labels her colour wheel.
Filling in spaces around paper shapes with chalk.
This artist sees if she can make purple by putting blue chalk on a red shape.

Birds and Nests

Birds and nests are some of my favourite art subjects.
Kids like to talk about flight, the migration of birds and their role in nature.
Learning about nests, eggs and bird behaviour is a wonderful way of exploring stages of growth, family and interdependency.

Here are a few bird and nest art pieces created by students.

Rainbow Owl
Sharpies, Pastels and Acrylic Paint
Eric Carle Inspired Bird
Paint, Cut Paper, Pastel
Making a Nest
Straw, Moss, Feathers, Paper and Paint
Bird Mask
Paper Mache, Acrylic Paint, Feathers
Owl and Mouse

Owl Mask
Paper Mache, Paint, Feathers. Pipe cleaners
Charlie Harper Inspired Owls
India Ink, Watercolour
Fantasy Bird
Pastels, Tempra Paint, Sequins
Blue Jay
Inspired by Bateman's Backyard Birds
Oil Pastel
I often suggest kids outline in oil pastel and 'fill in' with paint.

Nest
Cut Paper, Pastels, Watercolour Paint
Budgies
Pastels, Tempra Paint

Owl
Crayon, Water Colour Paint
OK I admit it owls are my number one favourite :)

Plus I found some inspirations for future ART AFTER SCHOOL projects:

Clay Birds in Nests
Always looking for clay projects that are 'do-able' for younger kids with a stable base and not so many break-y parts.

Super beautiful street art
Love the scale and colours
Birds in flight wire sculpture.
I love wreaths.

Lovely little bird ornament.
So cool- I think these were installed in a playground somewhere.

I would seriously love one of these.
I could just replace my livingroom furniture with a nest- and force everyone to hang out in it.
"No I'm sorry Nanny we don't have a couch, just the nest. Now climb in."
Most of my art projects are inspired by stories and literature and there is no shortage of wonderful books featuring our feathered friends including

and little kids love this Nest book - featuring rabbits!

This is a very sweet book! Especially good in the Springtime.

Come fly over and have some fun at Acorn Art Studio!
